William Shakespeare is perhaps not only England’s most famous playwright and poet but also the greatest writer in the world. He is often called as England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon”. His works have been translated into every major language and are read more widely than those of other writers.
Shakespeare was born on 26th April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon where he was brought up. He married Anne Hathaway when he was 18 and with whom he had three children: Susanna and twins Judith and Hamnet. At some time around 1589 he joined a theater company in London as an actor and began writing plays. Also Shakespeare became a part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, later known as a King’s Men. It was renamed after the death of Queen Elisabeth in 1603 when King James I who enjoyed watching Shakespeare’s plays awarded his company of actors a royal patent. His plays were very popular and he became a very rich man. In 1597 he bought the second-largest house in Stratford, New Place as his family house. Early years
He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564. His parents, John Shakespeare and Mary Arden, lost two daughters as infants. William became their eldest child. They had eight children in total.
His father worked as a glove-maker, but he also became an important figure in the town of Stratford by fulfilling civic positions. His mother Mary was the daughter of a landowner. William Shakespeare attended the local grammar school.
At the age of 18, in November 1582, he married Anne Hathaway, daughter of a local farmer. She was 26. They had three children, Susanna, Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet, the only son of William Shakespeare, died at the age of 11.

William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in the English town of Stratford-upon-Avon. His father was a businessman and the town's mayor. His mother came from a family that owned land near Stratford. William had three younger brothers and two younger sisters.
Like other boys of middle-class families, William attended a grammar school in Stratford where he got a good education and also learned Latin.
When William was 18 he married Anne Hathaway. They had three children, first Susanna and then twins, a son named Hamnet and a daughter named Judith. Hamnet died when he was 11.

What We Know about Shakespeare
The facts that we know with absolute certainty about William Shakespeare can be given in a few paragraphs. It is not strange that we know so little about one of the greatest men that that the world has produced. His age was not one of biographical writing. Newspapers and magazines did not exist. Encyclopaedias, dictionaries of names and volumes of Who is Who(1) had not been heard of. Few letters were written and less were kept. Yet we know about Shakespeare as much as (2) we do about most of the writers of the time, and even of many who lived much later.
The playwright’s father, John Shakespeare, moved to Stratford-on Avon (3) about 1550 and became a dealer in corn, meat, wool and leather. He probably dealt besides in all things that farmers about the village produced. He seems to have been a good man of business
